Emacs Series Kickoff: A roadmap

November 7th, 2008

I’ve already touched on some of the reasons I’ve decided to evaluate Emacs in a previous post, so if you’re questioning what brought me here, feel free to check it out. This will be the kickoff of my series on Emacs. I’ll be presenting these posts as something that works for me. For lots of people, vim is the best editor for the job. I’m not trying to evangelize or cause you to switch, but you should be aware of some of the features emacs offers so you know what’s missing (or what you should build) in Vim.

This first post is a bit of cheating in that I’ll just be outlining my likely progression through this series. Without further ado:

  1. Introduction and Installation
  2. The Emacs Mindset: Contextual Shifts
  3. Basics of being productive
  4. Essential Packages
  5. Emacs for Remoting
  6. Org-Mode
  7. Emacs as an Operating System
  8. What I’m missing from Emacs
  9. Unessential Packages
  10. Emacs vs. Vim

Here’s to a series I’m very excited about.
